FÁTIMA LEÓN at the worldclass mexico finalsI was raised in a house with my mother, grandmother, three aunts, and I have one sister, so I have experienced first-hand all women’s stages with every one of them. If this weren’t enough, life has been so generous and has introduced me to several other women in the form of friends, coworkers, and of course, romantic relationships, which have marked my life. I am increasingly convinced that women are made from a different matter, that they have a very different operating system, and that far from taking advantage of us men and get smart on us, they are comprehensive and empathic.
The world is becoming aware of this and people call it “women empowerment”. To me, this is a very ostentatious term to name something we have always known: THERE ARE REAL BADASS WOMEN. Period. But, of course, today everyone accepts it and applauds it. Well, today Saturday April 29th, Fátima León will be at the World Class Mexico finals for second consecutive year and will be the only woman participating in this edition; the same happened last year. Fátima will compete against four very talented bartenders who won their place through hard work, some of them from bars I love and admire, so whoever wins I am sure will be a worthy representative of Mexico, may the best bartender win. Except today I wanted to dedicate these lines to Fátima, not to wish her luck, because she doesn’t need it, she never has. With her talent and passion for what she does, she has opened a space and earned a place and people’s respect within a guild dominated by the male gender. This text is in fact to thank her, because being in the finals is a victory for this contemporary society, hungry and needy for gender equity, Fátima’s small contribution adds; it is her merit and nobody else’s. Today, Fátima, during the World Class finals will not represent “Women Empowerment”, in fact this event is much bigger. Today, when we see her in action, Fati will be representing the moment Mexico is going through, a country that is waking up and which is proud to be what it is, which screams to the big ones that “MEXICO IS THE SHIT”, which dares to break stereotypes and to fight tête-à-tête with whoever comes its way. That’s who Fátima is. This is why I believe in Fátima León, in the same way I believe in my mother, my grandmother, my colleagues, and in all THOSE WOMEN WHO HAVE THE WILL TO WIN. Thank you, Fátima, it’s not just me, we all believe in you: Israel Lara.
